CHANGING LIVES

HOPE worldwide-Washington, a branch of the international charity HOPE worldwide, seeks positive intervention in the lives of at-risk youth in the Puget Sound region, focusing particularly on the needs of Native American youth.

HOPE worldwide-Washington is partnering with Seattle Seahawks' All-Pro fullback Mack Strong. Four years ago, he and his wife, Zoe founded the TEAM-WORKS and After School Program to assist the development of Native American youth in our region.  Three times a year for eight consecutive weeks, program participants receive individualized attention focused on development in three crucial areas:

WE NEED HOPE

Infant mortality rates among Native Americans in Washington State are almost three times the ratees of all other races combined.

Less than 50% of Native American students graduate from school in the state of Washington.Young Native American men are killing themselves at a rate of more than twice the national average for their age group.

Almost 50% of all young Native Americans have serious alcohol or drug proglems according to the Indian Health Services.

Strong Mind
Students receive superior math and reading assistance through a partnership with the Catapult Online tutoring program - a sister program of Sylvan Learning Centers.

Strong Body
Professional, collegiate and high school athletes assist in training each student in six different sports. They focus on identifying every student's unique talents and strengths as well as increase general physical activity and healthy eating.

Strong Character
Community volunteers teach and model a character-building curriculum designed to instill ambition and commitment to achieve academically, increase consistent school attendance, and substantially narrow the academic achievement gap.

TEAM-WORKS Saturday Academy starts our Spring 8-Week session on Saturday, April 14th - June 2nd  the Tulalip Boys and Girls Club (near Marysville, exit 199 off of I-5). The program runs from 9:30-1:30 each Saturday.

The After School Tutoring program will start Tuesday, June 17th and meets on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 4:30- 5:30 PM at the Seattle Indian Center (just off Rainier Ave). We are looking for volunteers to sign up for ONE of these scheduled meeting days for a commitment of eight weeks (either Tuesday/Thursday OR Saturday).

Volunteers do not need to worry about teaching or tutoring students. Your job would be to encourage and build relationships with the students. If you are interested or know someone who is, please contact Stephanie Brown at stephwal@u.washington.edu or call (206)595-4488.
